IRSN: Sponsor an Irish Republican Socialist Prisoner of War
12 Sep 2009
In association with Teach na Failte, the International Republican Socialist Network is seeking individuals to join in an effort to secure material support for all of the prisoners of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement.
Because of a campaign of repression by the government of the Irish 26-county statelet there has been a dramatic increase in the number of prisoners from the IRSM now incarcerated and financial support for the families of these prisoners is a pressing concern. These prisoners include Paul Kelly, Damian Kelly, Neil Myles, John Mc Crossan, Owen Clail, Gerard Kelleher, Denis O Dywer, Paddy Walls, Eddie McGarrigle, and five others.
The IRSN is seeking individuals to commit to £5 or $10 a week, or £20 or $40 each month to the support of these prisoners. Individuals agreeing to sponsor an IRSM prisoner will be enabled to send the funds directly to the family of the prisoner, which helps to form an important human bond that contributes to the overall improvement in morale of the prisoners involved. We have pledges already from two prisoners, but need your assistance in ensuring support to them all. It is vital in this era where far too many think expressing their sentiments on the Web is sufficient to demonstrate their revolutionary commitment that we take this next step. So, please, put your money where your mouth is and make a profound improvement in the life of a republican socialist POW.
To participate, please contact the IRSN either at [email protected] or by mailing to IRSN, 804 Guerrero Street, San Francisco, CA94114USA. Let us know the level of support you can commit to and we will supply the information needed to send your financial support and correspondence to the individual prisoner's family.
In addition, the tremendous library of political works that had been build for the IRSM's prisoners in Portlaoise Gaol was dismantled when most of the prisoners were released. As a result of these new incarcerations there is pressing need to rebuild this resource quickly to enable the prison to resume its role as the 'university of the revolution'. Accordingly, the IRSN is again soliciting contributions of new and used books on socialism, anarchism, women's liberation, environmental defense, revolutionary history, and works of literature with Left political themes. All donations will be sent to Irish and Puerto Rican republican socialist prisoners. (Sadly books sent by the IRSN to republican socialist Breton and Catalonian republican socialist POWs were refused by the prisons.) These books are sent into the prisons as holiday gifts to the individual prisoners, but in order to send them on time to reach the prisoners by the holidays, all books must be received by the IRSN by November 1, 2009. Send book donations to: IRSN, 804 Guerrero Street, San Francisco, CA94114USA.
