IRSN: Solidarity with the Libyan Revolution
12 Sep 2009
The International Republican Socialist Network wishes to express its solidarity with the people of Libya on the 40th anniversary of their revolution, which occured on the 1st of this month. Perhaps more so than any other revolutionary effort in the 20th century, the Libyan revolution sought to create social justice and equity, while at the same time seeking to increase the extent of personal liberty and enable a nation's citizens to directly and collectively determine the course of their own lives.
We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous generosity of Libya in its support to other people in struggle around the globe and its efforts in service to the Pan-Arabist and Pan-Africanist causes.
It was with tremendous sorrow that we watched this selfless support for other revolutionaries worldwide repaid with very little attempt to defend the Libyan revolution when it confronted the full extent of hostility from the world's imperialist powers. Likewise we have been sorry to see the Libyan revolution forced to take several steps backwards under this relentless pressure from international imperialism.
We salute the Libyan revolution for its role in demonstrating another way forward for nations emerging from the sway of colonial domination.
