NEW QUEBECOIS LEFT PARTY
A new party has been formed in Quebec dedicated to both the building of socialism and the creation of an independent Quebecois. The party was founded last year in Montreal, forged out of a merger of the Union des Forces Progressistes and the movement Option Citoyenne.
The new party, called Québec Solidaire, is notable for being the first Quebecois nationalist party to fully recognize the rights and interests of the indigenous First Nation people there and to reach out towards this community in solidarity.
Québec Solidaire includes members of a host of other Left parties in Quebec, as well as non-partisan socialists and anarchists, though its program is not explicitly socialist. The IRSN will be watching the progress of this new force in Quebecois politics with interest and solidarity.
