IRSN Join March Demanding Open Borders in May Day Demonstrations
5 May 2008
Comrades of the International Republican Socialist Network in
the Pacific Northwest joined helping to coordinate demonstrations
in support of the one-day work stoppage by the International Longshore
Workers' Union to protest the war in Iraq. IRSN comrades in Portland,
Oregon were also involved in demonstrations in defense of immigrant
workers' rights on May Day.
Other IRSN comrades, in the San Francisco Bay Area, joined
in a May Day march and rally organized by immigrant workers
themselves (rather than participating in those organized for
immigrant workers by others), which was notable for having been
organized by twelve women who are themselves undocumented
immigrant workers, several of whom gave impassioned speeches
as their debut in public speaking, to a crowd of several hundred
demonstrators. The demonstration was, in part, the result of a
long term organizing effort by activists within the Reflections
Without Borders group, who are seeking to restore working
class leadership to the revoltionary movement, and of which
IRSN comrades are proud members.
