Free The Cork 5
International Republican Socialist Network, 9 August 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The International Republican Socialist Network condemn the sentences handed down on July 21, 2009 in the case of the Cork 5. The fact that the five men were convicted of membership in the Irish National Liberation Army on such flimsy evidence goes to show that the Special Criminal Court has not changed. It is still a vehicle of Free State repression. We also condemn the lengthy sentences given the five. We are perplexed as to why the laws banning organizations even exist in the first place.
We condemn the actions of the Garda and prosecution in this case. We see the attempt to portray the men as plotting a kidnapping as a liable against the Irish Republican Socialist Movement. If there was evidence of this plot, why was no one charged with it?
We extend our solidarity to Eddie McGarrigle, Neil Myles, John McCrossan, Gareth Dunne, and Gerard Kelleher, their families and friends. We demand an end to the Special Criminal Court, and to the harassment of members of the IRSM in the Free State.
Comrade Mary McIlroy
