Cork Five RSPOWs Defended in San Francisco St. Patrick's Day Parade
17 March 2008
The International Republican Socialist Network devoted its mobile unit in the
San Francisco St. Patrick's Day parade to questioning the Good Friday
Agreement and drawing attention to the arrest of five members of the Irish
Republican Socialist Party recently in CorkCity.
The IRSN led off its unit in the parade on Sunday with comrade Mary McIlroy
carrying aloft the Starry Plough. The flag was followed by the IRSN's 'Anti-
Imperialist Contingent' banner, declaring 'No War But The Class War!', which
drew repeated applause throughout the length of the parade route. Behind the
identifying banner marched members of various, local revolutionary groupings,
including the All-African People's Revolutionary Party, the Peace and Freedom
Party, the Industrial Workers' of the World, Reflections Without Borders,
Socialist Organizer, and El Nuevo Topo. Finally, at the rear of the marching
contingent, participants carried the flags Scotland, Wales, and Man to
illustrate the IRSN's commitment to the dismantling of the imperialist British state.
Following the marchers, the IRSN had a large cargo ban, transformed into a two-
sided billboard, which read: "Ten years since the GFA, Ten years since the
cease-fires--What has been won?" The question was answered with the words,
"Activsts arrested, Diplock Courts, and torture," before concluding with the
demand, "Free the Cork Five."
The 'Cork Five' is a reference to five activists of the IRSP who were arrested
in Cork last month on charges of being members of the INLA. While in custody,
Eddie McGarrigle was repeatedly pushed out of his wheelchair and he and
others of the IRSP prisoners were subjected to repeated kicks and punches.
All five are now free on bail, but still facing trail on the archaic and arcane
charge of 'membership'.
These arrests follow a series of arrests by the Dublin regime of IRSP members
on 'membership' charges in Dundalk and Waterford. The International Republican
Socialist Network is currently sending funds to assist in the defense of the
'Cork Five' and working to draw attention to the continued harassment of Irish
republican socialist militants by the Dublin regime.
