IRSN: Solidarity with the Puerto Rican Struggle for National Liberation and Socialism
28 Sep 2009
Comrades of the International Republican Socialist Network attended the annual Grito de Lares celebration at the San Francisco Women's Building on Sunday, 27 September 2009 hosted by Bay Area Boricuas to show their solidarity with the Puerto Rican struggle for national liberation and socialism.
Grito de Lares commemorates the Puerto Rican revolt against Spanish colonialism on 23 September 1868. This years celebration was focused on honoring members of the Bay Area community who, since the 1970s, have enriched the culture of the Bay Area with their contributions to the arts, community empowerment, and political movements including Raul Nieves, Elba Tuttle Montes, Deborah Santana, Jackie Santos, Avotcja, Maria Medina Serafin, Jenny Rodriguez, John Santos, Frank Espada, Isidoro and Aurora Calderon, Aurora Levin Morales, Dortea Wilkinson, Melba Madonado, Willie Rivera, Alfonso Texidor, Jahaziel Bonilla, Quique Avila, Piri and Susy Dodd Thomas, and Wilma Bonet.
The IRSN was pleased to have this opportunity to demonstrate our ongoing solidarity with the struggle of the Puerto Rican people for national liberation and socialism and reiterate our support for the Movimento Independentista Nacional Hostosiano (MINH) as providing present leadership to the liberation movement.
